Аn issue that obsessed the elite institutions of American higher education during the first half or two-thirds of the twentieth century: the desire to limit the number of Jews that were admitted.
The barely acceptable students of high status (such as the young George W. Bush, admitted to Yale in 1964 with marginal qualifications), who formed an important part of their student bodies, were not to be found among Jewish applicants.
Oh, Harvard's run by millionaires,
And Yale is run by booze,
Cornell is run by farmers' sons,
And Columbia's run by Jews ...
And it gets worse from there.
It was first naïvely thought that a better measure of intelligence, or some tests of character, would reduce the number of Jews, but no available test could do so. The explosion of apparently scientific methods of testing in World War I, devised to classify soldiers, suggested that perhaps Jews could be shown to be in some way deficient, but that was not the case. A new and distinctive approach to admissions had to be forged, in which academic merit, however defined, had to be supplemented and supplanted by other excluding requirements. Columbia pioneered in these measures. It was the first university to set up an admissions office, to limit the numbers of the entering class, to introduce criteria for "character" and "leadership."
Интересно почему именно евреи избежали компенсации через всеми нами любимую affirmative action?
